Because an HDPE hull can be significantly lighter than a comparable aluminum hull, a properly designed HDPE boat can sit higher in water, particularly when carrying a hunting load. Greater freeboard provides more distance between the waterline and the boat’s top edge, reducing the likelihood of water coming over the side in rough conditions or when heavily loaded.

Season-Long Reliability

Duck hunting happens in harsh waters: salt marshes, brackish rivers, muddy backwater areas. These environments can accelerate corrosion on aluminum boats, particularly around fasteners, fittings, and areas where the protective surface has been damaged. HDPE plastic boats are hardier.

HDPE itself is highly resistant to corrosion, making it well suited to repeated exposure to saltwater and brackish conditions. Hardware and other metal components still require appropriate care.

Hunting marshes means ground-outs on mud, scrapes against reeds and rocks, and general abuse that would damage other boats. Fortunately, HDPE is tough and highly impact-resistant, helping it withstand the bumps and scrapes that come with hunting in shallow water.

Its flexibility allows it to absorb impacts and flex under load rather than behaving like a more rigid material. That can be useful when hunting in shallow, uneven, or debris-filled water.
