Different Methods to Join HDPE Pipes

Joining HDPE pipes is a key stage in the creation of reliable and durable water supply, sewerage, and gas supply systems. The correct choice of HDPE pipe jointing method ensures compliance with the project requirements and normative documents, particularly concerning tightness, mechanical strength, and maintainability of the structure.
Polyethylene pipe connections are divided into two categories: detachable and non-detachable. Detachable connections include all types that can later be disassembled, such as flanged and crimp (also known as compression or collet) connections. On the other hand, welded joints are considered non-detachable and permanently secure the connection.

1. Thermal Welding 

Butt welding: This is a process that uses a heated tool to join HDPE pipes of the same diameter together. The pipes are heated using a welding machine until they melt, and then they are joined under pressure between 0.15 and 0.5 kg/cm2, depending on the standard of the welding process chosen. 

Electric coupling welding: This method uses special couplings that contain a built-in heating element to join HDPE pipes. During the heating process, pressure builds up in the area where the coupling and pipe are welded, creating a strong connection between the outer surface of the pipe and the inner surface of the coupling.

Hot air welding: The connection is formed after heating the surfaces to be joined with a stream of heated air. Additionally, a welding rod may be supplied to the joint area. Due to the lower level of mechanization, a reduction factor of 0.5 is applied to connections of polyethylene pipes created using heated air welding, even if all technological requirements are met. Hot air welding of polyethylene pipe is used when it is not practical or desirable to use butt welding or electrically resistance welding to create connections.

3. Mechanical Connection of HDPE Pipes

Flanged Connection: This type of connection is suitable for mounting fittings and creating transitions between different types of pipes. It requires the use of flanges, bolts, or studs, and gaskets to ensure a secure and tight fit. 

Compression Fittings: These fittings are used for quick and convenient connections between pipes without the need for special equipment. They work by clamping the pipe together using sealing rings, also known as collets.

Quality control: 

Visual inspection: Checking for correct connections and the absence of defects.

Pressure testing: Conducting hydraulic or pneumatic tests to ensure the tightness of connections.
